Let’s talk about things to stop

Overthinking, being sorry, lying awake in bed reviewing yesterday’s mistakes…sound familiar to you? These are behaviors I experienced myself and heard about from the women around me. They are all hurting your confidence and self-esteem. Two years ago, I started to write my personal blocklist. The things I want to stop. The traps I do not want to fall into anymore. I wanted it to be easy and short. Something that I have on hand as a print poster on my office wall to remind myself. So far it has helped a lot. And I have shared this list with my team and my friends. Because it WORKS!

1. Overthinking: Don’t think too much and get wound up in “what ifs”. Because then nothing gets done at all. Memorize this additional tip: Done is better than perfect.

2. People-pleasing: You cannot make it right for everyone. First, you must make it right for you. Afterwards, you can think of others. To fear that someone might not like you is real, but is it worth getting into a negative downward spiral because you want to be popular? Wouldn’t it be good to know you are right and stand by your opinion?

3. Inability to let go of defeats: You made a mistake. Fine. Learn from it, try to not do it again and move on, girl. Confidence and self-esteem are built on making mistakes and trying things out. You cannot make an omelet without breaking some eggs.

4. Perfectionism: This is a big one for so many women I have had the pleasure to meet. It must be perfect … always. But perfection takes time and is rarely achieved. Confident women know that you can also win with 80%.

5. Apologizing: “Sorry, perhaps I am wrong, …”. “Keep me honest here…” Stop, stop, stop saying sorry. Just delete it from your business vocabulary. How often do you hear a man starting a sentence with saying he is sorry? Correct, never. Don’t make yourself and your opinion smaller than it is. Don’t do that to your confidence..
